Even when I was running my erstwhile Dept.s #PHD programme, I was sceptical of the investment value of dong a PhD; while it paid off for a small (but vocal) few, they then convinced others that their success was more common than it actually was.
Now some research has confirmed that view (mostly) with the financial benefits only coming late in any career & not being that extensive.
Of course, the intellectual reasons to take a PhD still stand, but they can be costly!
