I was in elementary school when Jimmy Carter ran for reelection against Ronald Reagan and lost.
I still remember one of my elementary school classmates tell me early in the school year, before the election, that Jimmy Carter was an idiot and only idiots voted for him.
That's also my earliest memory of someone demonstrating to me that they were completely politically full of sh*t, a now-familiar experience. Even as a fifth grader, I could see through Reagan's BS.
I also recall just walking away from the person while they were ranting at me about things they did not understand but were proud to announce to the world, which was also prescient and has become familiar.
I also remember Reagan, shortly after the election, ordering the White House staff to remove the photovoltaic solar panels Carter had installed on the roof. What a lost opportunity to lead.
It's hard for some people to recognize that today's fraught political environment, led by people who are completely full of sh*t, has been brewing in the works for a long, long time. But I've seen it. We are still dealing with the consequences.
