I attended an exceptional HS, class of '61. In Honors English, we had to subscribe to the New Yorker and Scientific American, given homework based on their articles. A Japanese outfit bought Scientific American ~1960 and suddenly there was a spastic sentence seemingly in every other paragraph; the teacher had picked Scientific American because articles were well written/edited, exposing us to good scientific writing. The homework turned into editing assignments.
