When I was very little, maybe like 6-8? I was spending Christmas with my Catholic parents and they had the neighbors over. They had a little black puppy who was feeling sick. Me being the quiet and gentle child I was at the time spent the entire evening with the puppy on my lap comforting him while he had a toy in his mouth
As I got a few years older and the dog became fully grown, there is no question in my mind that dog loved me... He would get really elated and jump at me and lick me whenever I ran into the neighbor and him and whenever I visited them with my mom the dog would spend the entire time on my lap cuddling me like on that christmas evening
I also remember a different neighbor once getting mad and yelling at me in the middle of the street, for reasons I don't remember... but this dog jumped over the fence of the neighbors garden (something he never usually did because he didn't like to not be around his humans) and ran across the street to bark and threaten the guy who was yelling at me
I miss him so, so much. I really badly wish that I could have let him pin me down and give me the knot in my early teens tbh uwu
