You know what the next step in REAL innovation would be? The things the Jetsons told us would happen. Not the flying cars, necessarily, but things that make chores easier.
A machine that sorts and folds your clothes after washing and drying them. A machine that cooks a meal from fresh ingredients. A dishwasher that also puts away the dishes once they're dry. A garden robot that can plant seeds, give the right amount of water, and identify and remove weeds.
The thing is, WE NOW HAVE THE TECH TO DO ALL OF THIS! So why can't it exist? People made and perfected the washing machine and dryer, but instead of creating a sorter/folder that fits in everyone's house, all they can think to do is add WiFi and an app that spies on you.
I don't think Ted K was entirely right about the industrial revolution, but it certainly took a turn for the worse when we stopped focusing on automating physical, real-world chores.
