Watching OP play Castlevania reminds me of a trend that I'm actually happy has disappeared despite my love for retro games: The Arcade Mentality.
Video games started out in arcades where the hardware was customized for one game, to be solely focused on gameplay and for the difficulty to get you to keep feeding it quarters.
It took a while for game designers to add story to it, vary up the gameplay and tone down the difficulty. This started in the NES and probably finalized by the N64
