Being old is having the opportunity (an opportunity you may not choose to take) to learn one of the great truths: virtually everything you learned as a young person is true (don’t lie, don’t hurt people, don’t be selfish, share what you have, treat people with empathy, don’t tell them what to do, bullying is bad), and virtually all the trappings of society in the adult world are actually built on the exact opposite.
There is a lot of grief and anger in this lesson.
