Travelling around the US for 3 months in 2017, I asked everyone who had a conversation with me if they voted in 2016 (not who they voted for, but did they vote). Out of 100s, only one said they'd voted...
One 21yo woman told me that their 'family kept out of politics', many that it wasn't their 'business', some that they didn't like either candidate or that their preferred candidate didn't make it through the primaries...
Coming from Australia, where voting is compulsory, this made me feel queasy.
It's hardly a democracy, just a fight between who can leverage enough power with wedge politics (guns, abortion rights, LGBTQ+) to bring out the voters.
And I'll add: we need to find a way to engage people who are living below the poverty line and all of those who are disillusioned by politics. This is the key.
