-International Events-
1. EU leaders to huddle on defense against Russia and handling Trump: European Union leaders gather on Monday to discuss how to bolster the continent's defenses against Russia and how to handle U.S. President Donald Trump after his decision to impose tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico and China. "Europe needs to assume greater responsibility for its own defense," Costa said in a letter to the leaders. "It needs to become more resilient, more efficient, more autonomous and a more reliable security and defense actor." (Reuters)
2. Trump Announces Talks With Canada, Mexico Over Sweeping Tariffs: Trump said he was "speaking with Prime Minister (Justin) Trudeau tomorrow morning, and I'm also speaking with Mexico tomorrow morning." He said "Americans may feel economic "pain" from the 25 percent duties but that it will be "worth the price." Trump has also hit China with a 10-percent tariff in addition to levies already in place. China, Mexico and Canada are the top three US trade partners and all have vowed to retaliate when the tariffs take effect Tuesday. (IBTimes)
3. Trump threatens to cut funding for South Africa over land policy: US President Donald Trump has said he will cut all future funding to South Africa over allegations that it was confiscating land and "treating certain classes of people very badly". Last month, President Cyril Ramaphosa signed into law a bill that allows land seizures without compensation in certain circumstances. Land ownership has long been a contentious issue in South Africa with most private farmland owned by white people, 30 years after the end of the racist system of apartheid. (BBC)
4. Israeli Prime Minister In Washington For Gaza Ceasefire Talks: Netanyahu's office said he would begin discussions with Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff on Monday over terms for the second phase of the truce. Indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas are meanwhile due to resume this week. (IBTimes)
-US Events-
1. Musk says administration is on verge of shutting USAID: Early Monday, Musk held a live session on X Spaces, previously known as Twitter Spaces, and said he'd spoken in detail about USAID with President Trump. "He agreed we should shut it down," Musk said. "It became apparent that its not an apple with a worm it in," Musk said. "What we have is just a ball of worms. You've got to basically get rid of the whole thing. It's beyond repair. ... We're shutting it down." Musk's comments came after the administration placed two top security chiefs at USAID on leave. The move came after the two USAID officials refused to allow personnel from the Musk-run DOGE to access classified material in restricted areas. (CBS)
2. Elon Musk’s DOGE commission gains access to sensitive Treasury payment systems: The highest-ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, Ron Wyden of Oregon, on Friday sent a letter to Trump’s Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressing concern that “officials associated with Musk may have intended to access these payment systems to illegally withhold payments to any number of programs.” “The @DOGE team discovered, among other things, that payment approval officers at Treasury were instructed always to approve payments, even to known fraudulent or terrorist groups. They literally never denied a payment in their entire career. Not even once.” (AP) (AC-This will be a Pandora's box. Get your popcorn.)
3. Mayor says 5 injured in fatal Philadelphia plane crash remain hospitalized, 3 in critical condition: Three people injured on the ground when a jet crashed in a busy Philadelphia neighborhood, killing seven people, remain in critical condition, Mayor Cherelle Parker said Sunday. Parker said 22 people were injured and five of them remain hospitalized. At least 11 homes were significantly damaged, along with some businesses. (AP)
-Regulatory and Legal-
1. DOJ Claims Fiat Money Is Not Necessarily Property: A dispute between the U.S. Department of Labor and a landscaping company led the DOJ to state that money was not always considered property. In C.S. Lawn & Landscape v. U.S. Department of Labor, the District Court Of Columbia made this allegation, arguing that “money is not necessarily ‘property’ for constitutional purposes.” The footnote explains that the government is the one that creates fiat money, and it is also empowered to retake part of that money in the form of taxation, which is not considered a deprivation of property. (BitcoinCom)
2. Russia plans to create mandatory registry for crypto mining equipment: Russia’s Ministry of Energy announced plans to create a single registry for crypto mining equipment to better identify the nation’s mining activities. (TheBlock)
-CBDCs/World Currencies/Strategic Reserves-
1. Cynthia Lummis Reveals Ongoing Plan To Pass Bitcoin Reserve Bill: Speaking in Washington, D.C., she discussed the progress of the proposed Bitcoin reserve bill, which aims to strengthen the country’s financial system by integrating Bitcoin into national and state-level reserves. Lummis said that she has been trying to gather Senate supporters for the establishment of the Bitcoin reserve strategy. The law needs sixty votes for approval, and this will only be possible if Republicans and Democrats support the bill. Lummis has affirmed that the interaction with lawmakers has been good but more efforts must be made in order to advance the bill. (CoinGape)
-Institutional Concerns-
1. El Salvador Keeps Buying Bitcoin Despite Neutering BTC Law: El Salvador has added 52 Bitcoin to its reserves in 2025, despite an IMF loan deal limiting its crypto ambitions. The government continues to accumulate Bitcoin, with a total holding of over 6,055 Bitcoin valued at nearly $600 million. (Decrypt)
-Economic Indicators-
1. Nasdaq futures plunge 2.7% as Trump’s trade war rattles markets: Nasdaq 100 futures slumped on Feb. 3, having fallen almost 2.7%, according to Finviz. Meanwhile, other US equity futures opened down, with the Russell 2000 small-cap US stock market index down 3.2%, the S&P 500 down 2%, and futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average down around 1.5%. Crypto markets have also been mauled over the past day, with total market capitalization dumping more than 13% as $450 billion exited the space over the past 24 hours. (CoinTelegraph)

-Technology and Science-
1. CISA employees told they are exempt from federal worker resignation program: A source familiar with the matter said CISA employees are exempt from the offer because they are considered national security staff. (TheRecord)
2, OpenAI Caught Using Reddit to Train AI: OpenAI is using Reddit's r/ChangeMyView to test the persuasiveness of its AI models, and it raises questions about data sourcing, AI influence, and ethics. This is not about an AI conversational feature but rather an experiment on persuasion. The subreddit, where users post strong opinions and invite others to challenge them with counterarguments, provides a rich dataset of human reasoning. OpenAI's latest models are proving to be more persuasive than the majority of human users on the subreddit. (TechTImes) (AC-If OpenAI's models are generally more persuasive than humans on Reddit, this is a major indicator of current and future threats to independent thought and freedom. Humans will need to up their reasoning and assessment skills.)
-Bitcoin Community-
1. BTC dominance nears 4-year high: “Ethereum just fell -37% in 60 hours since the trade war headlines mid-day on Friday,” Kobeissi noted, calling the drop “insane.” Crypto market sentiment is predictably weak amid an atmosphere of uncertainty across risk assets. (CoinTelegraph)
