Hey losers, everybody get in: it’s time for my annual Holiday Postal Tips From A Mailroom Worker to Make Everyone’s Life Easier. (In the U.S., at least. Canada, you’re just fucked this year, sorry lmao)
Are you MAILING SHIT? Don’t be a goddamned sucker and wait in line at the post office for chrissakes. You will wait a long time and be mad. The people behind you will also be mad. Instead, go to USPS dot com, make an account, print a label for your package, and then you can either schedule a pickup at your door or take it to the PO and just leave it on the counter/in the bin/hamper/whatever your post office has without needing to wait. Bonus: it’s cheaper than the retail counter! Don’t have a printer? Use your work’s, a friend’s, or your dealer’s. It will still be faster than waiting in line.
Are you mailing LOTS OF SHIT, like from your uncharacteristically popular Etsy store? After you print those labels, make a fuckin SCAN FORM so that the postal clerk can scan one barcode instead of making the whole line wait while they scan all 20 of your barcodes individually as the pile grows taller and wider. The clerks will remember you and be nice to you.
Are you RECEIVING SHIT? Do you have your tracking number? Are you tempted to call customer service or a 1-800 USPS number to ask why tf your package is late? FUCKIN PLEASE DO NOT. Once the package is received by the carrier, the shipper has no way of knowing more than the tracking information that you the customer can see. We will just say words to make you feel like you matter. USPS customer service ALSO DOES NOT KNOW more than what you can see. You will be wasting their time and making everyone’s shit even more late. FUCKIN WAIT.
Are you wondering when you should send or order shit so it will ARRIVE ON TIME? Lmao, nobody else but you cares about your package unless you have enough money to not need the postal service anyway. The best time is YESTERDAY, and the 2nd best time is NOW. The post office is still intentionally understaffed, and covid is still causing much more shortages staffing due to illness than pre 2020 (without widespread masking, the flu is back too). Your package is probably stuck in “in transit” status for the seventh straight day because there are literally not enough employees to move it.
Do you HAVE TO GO TO THE POST OFFICE even tho I told you not to? For fucks sake, don’t go at lunch or closing time. Best time is usually mid morning, unless you absolutely live waiting in long lines. And WEAR A GODDAMN MASK. Lord knows the clerks probably aren’t, and who tf else is gonna take your package when they get sick? They don’t have enough clerks as is!
