This functionality has nothing to do with DNS, but with the browser used. It manages to configure the browser to say that certain types of links will open certain applications. It can be done manually, but extensions are usually used for this.
The difficulty will be to have an agreement between all the clients so that they all have the same input parameters to receive this information and know what to do.
