One nice thing about not owning a car since 2007 is the complete lack of guilt around bike purchases. Of course we still look for good deals, but when my wife wants a Brompton there's no "well do we really NEED this?" hand-wringing. She wants a Brompton and we can afford it, she gets a Brompton. I wanted a Yuba Kombi (+ motor), I got it. We sell/donate the bikes we don't use, and grow attached to the ones we regularly use. They're saving us roughly $10k/yr car costs, so they pay for themselves.
