I heard that pagan religions tend to incorporate (add, append) gods and other supernatural beings from other religions, instead of going into wars about disagreement on whose gods or rituals is better or enforce to believe others in own gods.

Aim of question is to understand when religious wars started as phenomena, and what historical documents and archeological artifacts points to that time.
