I've also encountered books that describe ant with "army ant syndrome*" as primitive, since they do not build nests and the authors supposed that all ants used to wander around like that... but other authors have called army ants "highly specialized" since their bodies, and biology allow them to function more like a single big organism than other ants.
But for all this criticism of the term "primitive" I don't think it's useless. I understand what's trying to be conveyed. 3/
