Things I’ve learned on Masto this week:
• Don’t use content warnings. They’re bad, and a form of censorship which denies lived experience. Use hashtags, and filter off those.
• Use content warnings. Respect your readers. Hashtags are bad, and aren’t automatic.
• Alt text should only have a short summary. The post itself should have all the context.
• Alt text should be as detailed a description as possible, but should stick to what is depicted.
• Alt text with extra flourishes and info are wonderful, and fun to come across.
• You should chide people for making these faux pas, because it’s the only way people learn.
• You shouldn’t chide people for making these faux pas (knowingly or otherwise), that’s counterproductive. Gently encourage instead.
I do empathise with people starting out here.
