I see (sounds lovely!). Maybe you could ask them what they think about it? My guess is that the different cultures produce different manners related to straightforwardness and use of cordial small talk.

My native language is French, so I have been also sometimes a bit blocked when not being able to say "please" or make things sound nicer out of respect or politeness.

When talking to my friends in Finland, the gap is even bigger, their language seems very much more direct.
