Yes we don't live on ramen -- you literally can't (lots of health issues will crop up and your medical bills will break you.) Yes we sometimes "splurge" and buy a videogame or something (the most expensive game I bought in a long time was $30...) That's so we don't go insane. But 99% of the budget goes to "being alive."
