Hey #GardeningMastodon people: here is a plant (actually #tree ) ID to puzzle over. A friend sent me this photo and asked what it is. Puget Sound region, Washington state, USA. It's a tree that's been pollarded/pruned back hard to produce a compact ice cream cone shape. But what kind of tree? iNaturalist is no help. Those hard, glossy leaves leave me guessing magnolia but I'm not sure. What do you think?
