You basically find a brownie recipe that takes a little longer to bake than a blondie one and make a half batch of each. Pour the brownie batter in the pan and bake just enough that the top starts to set. Pour on the blondie batter and finish baking.
*blondies might also be called cookie bars or similar in your mom's cookbooks.
