This is what killed my great-grandmother’s baby sister in the early 1900s. Their mother was sick that day and asked the older siblings to watch the baby. They felt terribly guilty about her death for many, many years even though they obviously had no idea in advance the milk they fed to her was tainted.

We are so lucky to have safe, pasteurized milk (and much stricter food safety guidelines in general) today.
