Days after the fire, a Monterey County health official said it was not "prudent" to test for soil because "we don't necessarily know what we're looking for at this time."
Residents I've interviewed have suffered from nosebleeds, headaches, lung burning, asthma, fatigue, metallic taste in mouth (among other). On heavy metals being found in soil near plant, hazardous waste expert Sil Caggiano tells me...
"The heavy metals associated w/ lithium batteries are cobalt, copper, nickel, manganese, lead, mercury, & cadmium. Most are very dangerous. Even though it’s winter, if not completely remediated, leafy greens like spinach & lettuce, carrots, radishes, zucchini, & some wetland plants uptake this stuff into their structure and who and what ever consumes it will have it in their system.
aggiano continued: The metals "bioaccumulates in our bodies and poison us. Same with animals that we eat that eat the contaminated vegetation. It bioaccumulates in them then we get it when we eat them. Once inside, heavy metals are extremely slow to leave."

"Beyond the concern over heavy metals, Caggiano implores officials to test the soul for hydrofluoric acid (once hydrogen fluoride was released from the lithium fire, it becomes hydrofluoric acid once it hits moisture)."
