I have often wondered what makes King David a character worthy of creating the monarchical and messianic line in Jewish tradition. David is full of flaws. He makes some pretty egregious mistakes. His greatest sin is likely sleeping with Bat Sheva and then having her husband, Uriah, placed in dangerous combat by himself to ensure his death. This sin is pretty incredibly unforgivable and David is punished for it. But when confronted about it by Nathan the prophet, David's reaction is simply, "I sinned against the Eternal." No excuses. No justification. No, "I'm sorry, I was weak, I was in a bad state of mind." Compare that to Saul who, after failing to follow God's command in destroying Amalek (bracketing for the moment any ethical struggles we may have with that command) and being confronted by Samuel with his sin replies, "For I feared the nation and listened to their voice." He gives an excuse. He doesn't respond like David and the monarchy is taken from him.
