Some students have been traumatized by either always feeling lost in some subjects OR feeling like they are doing something so simple and boring it's pointless. Their sweet spot has shrunk to a razor's edge. You need to be very responsive and observant to get them engaged again. It's almost like putting on a show-- that magic content that's simple but raises complex questions.
But just getting them engaged isn't enough-- you also need to help them to expand their comfort zone.
