Of course there was a similar tragedy when the first Pride of Baltimore suffered a knockdown and sank in 1986. This is just my guess, but I think you can have too much confidence in your design, and too much sail on.
As I remember the pride story, the ship was knocked down, and hatches and passageways were open, resulting in a rapid filling of the ship.
