What if that population bottleneck at about 800k years ago was due to proto-humans "discovering fire" losing the fear of fire that most other creatures seem to have. Really people are firebugs. Some try to push fire use back up to 2000k years-- at some point we figured out how to not just take advantage of fire but make it when we wanted it, carry it around.
And what if we were just... not good at fire safety? Bring a fire in a cave? suffocate. Accidentally burning whole forests.
