If Blockchains had no shitcoin (merge minning and two way beg) no one would be pretending that they are not useful. They clearly offer services that can't be offered any other way without either KYC or the UX and rug pulls of black markets.
If I was building on Bitcoin, I would just assume that Drivechains are a thing, and if they never happen then the only opportunity cost is not working on a whole other industry, because the status quo is doomed for becoming either a small KYCed industry or obscure black market anarchy.
It will became ridiculous when all LSPs are asking you to KYC, or geoblocking you, while Tether on Tron is the only acceptable thing at your local non-kyc exchanges.
