Couldn't following or unfollowing a thread be handled internally on the server? Or is it your intent to be able to follow a thread without following someone in the thread?
For example, in Hubzilla, I can follow and unfollow threads. This does not affect whether I follow specific actors though. It only affects whether I get notified of any new posts or likes on that thread.
