Speaking of The Last of Us, I've been feeling lately like I want another cathartic story that emotionally rips me to pieces (and, ideally, puts some of it back together again)
It might be finally time to read Gideon's Ninth
Or maybe I'll re-read the Shieldrunner trilogy, which ends on a hopeful note despite the gravitas
The older I get, the more I appreciate stories that depict various forms of hardships and loss. The cathartic journey of Feeling the Feels when there's genuine loss is something I find increasingly important.
It's not just death. Things change. Loss isn't "bad", it's a natural result of our experiences and relationships and environments meaningfully changing over time. Beyond death, my friendships are different, my family is different, and my very perception of the world is different. I don't see the world or experience stories the way I did as a child, a teenager, or a young adult. And I want to be able to relate to characters and stories that also go through that journey
