I made the decision in 2005 to write some books instead of papers, to make my work more durable, visible, respectable. Looking at my citation figures, I find that yes, my books are cited much more often than my papers.

But the question is: if I had spent that time writing papers instead of books, there would have been a much larger number of individual pieces for colleagues to cite. And though spread across more units, possibly my total number of citations would have been larger.
