I've always had a theory that our brains are tuned to focus on people to a far greater extent than everything else around us. Just like dogs notice and tune in on other dogs way before - and way more - than anything else.
In fact, I think our brains notice people first, then food, then cars on a roadway. Cars because we've been conditioned to avoid danger. So if you have a picture of an empty road versus a picture with a single car on that road, your eyes will focus immediately on the car, evaluate it, and make it part of a mental story.
