2/ Those luminous bands show the Sun's apparent path on the sky. The camera was pointing West, so what you see here are a couple hundred sunsets in one single pic.
The lowest arc to the right is the winter solstice on June 21. Then, as days go by, the point where the sun sets moves to the left. The tallest arc to the left corresponds to a few days before the summer solstice on Dec 21.
The dark bands are cloudy days, and as you can see we barely have them at Paranal 😉
