I am in favor of building tools that let the user control the experience so that is works for them. People should absolutely get to decide who gets to respond to them as every public communication is not an invitation for public criticism and debate. (e.g. The YouTube comments section.) Users should be able to broadcast, narrowcast, and private message. Tools should allow users to distribute the messaging however they prefer and that should include how and with whom they want to engage with.

Some of this will be solved with the ability to incorporate different relays … public open, semi-public, private, etc.
