I will be honest. As a member of the first generation of people with Jewish heritage born after the Holocaust, I’ve been expecting something like what’s happening in the US and around the world. Call it fascism, call it authoritarianism, call it nazism, call it white supremacy, call it what you will. We see it and we recognize it.
Even as a young child I saw those black and white movie reels of the emaciated children, women, and men as they were physically freed from the concentration camps - but never freed in mind or spirit. I saw images of the trophies collected by the people of Germany and Austria and Poland - bones, clothing made from the skin of the murdered, images of bulldozers pushing aside the mounds of the murdered.
As I grew older, I learned that the Jews were not the only people oppressed with torture and genocide. And even older now I see the Jews engaged in oppression and genocide of others - and I am horrified by the evil that humans are willing to engage in and sometimes even delight in.
I expected evil. I expected competent evil. I expected banal evil. I did not expect buffoons.
And yet here we are, about to go under the thumb of the most horrifying buffoons - beyond imagination.
I know it seems trite - but I am so offended that democracy is being taken down by a bunch of greedy, immature, clowns.
I don’t really know where to go with this. I’m horrified every single day as I observe the political realm, not just in the US but around the world. I don’t know what to tell you other than find the people with whom you share love and hold them close. Do what you can to resist in the ways that are most suitable for you.

We don’t have to be heroes. Stay alive as long as you can to enjoy the beauty that life will always offer you if you are willing to see it, even in the worst of times.
