Is it possible to work out the originating server for the toot and cache their version? If you want to keep just 1 copy then finding the 'authoritative original' seems like a good option?
Going to the original server and getting the full thread from there would make the viewing experience much fuller too. That's something Phanpy does (albeit with a button press) and it makes the experience so much better to see all the replies/activity, would love to see a client that can do this by default.
