I used to serve on local government, and self driving cars came up multiple times in planning. I’ll attempt to share my observations with impartiality:
-young urban planners I’ve spoken to can see a future where cars become as expensive and impractical in modern life as horses.
-cities outlast empires because they create opportunities for unexpected opportunities when people of different backgrounds have impromptu, unexpected interactions and share ideas. When life is fully automated and planned as soon as you step out the front door, how are random interactions going to happen?
-a lot more infrastructure is necessary for this technology to be prevalent in order to handle the computational and communications requirements. Specifically edge computing data ‘centers’ and 5g cellular. Most forward thinking cities aren’t built out for this yet. Imagine freeways and smaller communities.
-see point above and look into the FCC mandates. Your local officials are legally COMPELLED to vote in favor of this infrastructure. We could not vote against certain 5g infrastructure proposals.
-the cost of transportation will diminish so much, it will improve the lives of those with limit economic opportunity.
-these vehicles will be expected to driver safer at faster speeds than humans. This means people could access more affordable housing farther away from their work, play, and necessities, without sacrificing commute time.
-parking could go away, since autonomous electric vehicles could just constantly be in motion rather than parked. Parking space is the largest obstacle to density on a property.
-the status quo is unsustainable to too many people disenfranchised by the current fiat system. But cities don’t have control over monetary policy. The levers they do have are in urban planning, local policies, and development ordinances.
