The Moynihan Train Hall opened in 2021 as a waiting room annex to NYC's otherwise dungeon-like Penn Station. The new hall was built out of the former sorting area of the adjacent Farley Post Office complex (which, at one time, had its own platform for railroad mail shipments).
Many of the design elements pay homage to the original above-ground Penn Station, which was demolished in 1963 to make way for Madison Square Garden.
