The independent polling organization "Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute" (HKPORI) announced in a statement on Thursday (February 13th) that it would indefinitely suspend all self-funded research effective immediately, and may transform or even cease operations in the future.
The statement indicated that "HKPORI has always been law-abiding. However, given the current environment, although we hope to continue promoting scientific public opinion research, we find it extremely difficult to proceed and have no choice but to halt our operations."
Late last year, scholar Chung Kim-wah, former deputy CEO of HKPORI, was placed on a wanted list with a bounty by the Hong Kong government. Last month, Hong Kong police took action against HKPORI three times, and its chairman and CEO Robert Chung, along with two staff members, were taken to the police station to assist with investigations.
HKPORI was originally established in 1991 as the Hong Kong University Public Opinion Programme. It regularly published various surveys including popularity ratings of government officials, Hong Kong people's identity recognition, and attitudes toward the "June 4th" incident. It has long served as a pulse-taker of society, being widely cited by media and academic research, and became one of the key indicators of public sentiment in Hong Kong.
