Some more last-minute good news: Biden banned drilling for oil or gas in 25 million square kilometers of US ocean! This covers the whole East Coast, the eastern Gulf of Mexico, the coasts of Washington, Oregon and California, and parts of Alaska’s Northern Bering Sea.
But wait, won't Trump instantly undo this ban?
He says he'll try. But maybe not.
First, Biden used the 1953 Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, a law that lets presidents withdraw federal waters from future oil and gas leasing and development. This law does not give presidents authority to undo this action.
Of course, the Trump administration will try to undermine all laws it doesn't like.
But consider this. Trump proposed a major expansion in offshore drilling early in his first term. But in 2020, he extended a ban on future oil drilling in the Eastern Gulf and *expanded* it to include the Atlantic coasts of three states: Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.
So we'll see.
