Computer Scientists
I have some bad news for you, neither Bill Gates nor Steve Jobs are the fathers of computer science. Bill Gates is just a person without morals and Steve Jobs although a great visionary is far from being the one who laid the foundations of computing.
I am going to leave a lot of people out, this is just a small introduction for those who want to delve into this wonderful world.
Alan Turing
Father of theoretical computer science, without him nothing of what we can do today with a computer would have been possible.
Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie
Creators of Unix, the father of all operating systems, its specification is still valid, it is the operating system that dominates the world, any serious operating system derived from Unix. Attached is an image where you can see the development of the different Unix and derivatives.
Ray Tomlinson
A giant, inventor of the TCP protocol and email over ARPANET, the precursor of the Internet. His is the @.
Tim Berners-Lee
Inventor of the World Wide Web (WWW). He created the HTTP protocol, the URL and the HTML language.
Richard Stallman
Ideologue of the free software movement, perhaps without him Linux would not be what it is today. Linux currently accounts for 99% of the servers on the Internet. All the supercomputers in the top500 list are Linux.
Linus Torvalds
What to say, he created a Unix clone to run on x86 computers, it happened just when the BSD world was immersed in legal disputes over UNIX licenses. Now Linux dominates the world, if it weren't for the legal litigation, maybe BSD would dominate the world.
