Huh. 1-10 in English clearly comes from German. So obvious I missed it, while living there for 12 years 🤦♀️
What I did notice is this: in English, words in a small child's vocabulary (describing the body, the home, the farm) all come from German. 1-10 fits this pattern. French words were adopted for "grown up" things (presumably, by grown-ups, being fashionable).
Interestingly: I learned German til age 5, then English & French. Lucky me, a good age to switch.
