Reaper has a fabulous feature called "Monitor FX" that's quite overlooked, especially by people who just started using the DAW.
The difference is that Monitor FX can be bypassed to check the sound with/without the added chain, but doesn't get rendered even if it's active. Game changer if you tend to forget those things like I do.
