I did that same thing a couple months ago. I wiped out the old laptop and put Linux on because I heard that wouldn’t take up as much space as windows. Then started Bitcoin core. 2 days later it failed because old laptop didn’t have a large enough hard drive. So I ordered a new SSD from Amazon and replaced the old drive (it was easy, just a couple screws in the back of my laptop and a YouTube video). Reinstalled Linux and Bitcoin core and success!
