As a software engineer who was once told that I should "smile more" during a performance review, I completely agree.
Ironically, I'm was quite friendly with my team! Even arranged some of the team parties. We got along well.
The comment arose because when I walked down the hall I was often deep in thought, trying to solve some problem. I did not greet or smile at the management folks as they walked by. It never occurred to me that this was an important part of my job.
