I promise you, it doesn’t work. The plants grow to a certain size and then stop growing, start yellowing, and switch to unhappily surviving. The roots hate to go down into the level where the soil is mixed with styrofoam! And it’s so hard to keep them moist enough for the plants.
This is the third old planter with oddly sickly plants I’ve uprooted to find styrofoam in the soil. I’m quite sure the mint planter has packing peanuts, too, but it’s in full bloom.
