That's one of the catches even if he were to have done so right after the debate mess. There is relatively little time to gather support and convince people to back anyone beyond the "We all have to come together to prevent him from being elected again." And that is assuming if he drops out there isn't a half dozen or more folks suddenly throwing their hat into the ring. This may be a screwed either way it plays out.
