An interesting corrolary to WWII. The japs hoped to break us swiftly, inflict enough damage we shrugged and figured it would be easier to give them their domain than fight them for it.

The germans hoped that we'd watch from afar, grossly underestimating the level of communist control over our government, and absolutely overestimating the effect public opinion had. I could understand why they'd enter 1938 seeing a huge fraction of american-germans and a generally isolationist country as a surefire call that we'd stay out of the war.

But 6 years later they'd be interviewing GI's in france and hearing them say "*tbh I don't know why I'm here, I was only really wanting to fight the japs*"

It would be interesting to see a true axis where a war starts and china embargos the US, everyone starts hoarding oil, and everything tips on its head overnight. Things would be VERY hard to imagine there. We pretend we're in a real fight with the east right now but it's just proxy war compared to what they can do, holding so much debt, providing so much of our medication, our industry, our living materials. Cut off the flow of shipping and suddenly we learn you can't live off an economy based on Cisco IT systems and Goyslop media generation
