Back then, it was pretty much a cesspit of spam and porn, but you could still find some active newsgroups. But even then, the only people left were all the old assholes who hate everything (looking at you, comp.lang.javascript). No idea what it's like today. There are no modern Usenet clients meant for posting anymore... only piracy.
