There was a bit of controversy about a Mastadon app, Ice Cubes, getting held up last week, and now it and others are flying through - hopefully Damus can catch the slipstream.
Phil Schiller joined Mastodon a few days ago, so perhaps a more direct route to explore at some point.
If the protocol/relays are completely agnostic, I imagine they’ll expect a lot of heavy-lifting from the client.
