I'm grateful when I even get the sliced jalapeños I request, a lot of times the servers don't seem to acknowledge what I requested.
Bill at Merit Vegan Restaurant in Sunnyvale knows me well enough, he'll bring me such things without me even having to ask at this point, but a lot of the other servers there it seems as if my words go in one ear and out the other.
Mixed results at Golden Lotus in Oakland too.
Bare Knuckle Pizza (also in Oakland) has "thai chilis" on their TNT pizza, but have heeded my requests to have them added to other pizzas too, I think for an upcharge? Still, it's worth it.
I'm forgetting which random Thai place I was at in Santa Clara years ago and asked for their larb "spicy" and they were like, "do you want regular spicy or Thai spicy" and I opted for the Thai spicy and finally got something that was really cookin!
But it's pretty rare to get that kind of interaction. ;-/
Could be worse. I remember the so-called "salsa" in Montreal being more like ketchup? When I went to college in Minnesota, everything seemed rather bland as well.
