I believe America’s cultural taboo against talking about politics in casual conversation is largely to blame for the cultural divide we see today.
In the name of polite conversation, we refuse to work through or try to understand the major issues facing our larger community. We don’t prepare our children, in the safe family space, with any knowledge or introduction on the topics. As a result, they enter the world completely unprepared to talk about important political issues. Being ignorant of the issues, these unprepared children are highly susceptable to propaganda, from people who are willing to talk to them about politics (and who likely do not have their interests in mind).
You are not shielding your children by refusing to talk about politics at the dinner table. You are just ensuring that they will instead learn about it from activists on social media or at their school.
